Random past
“Random Past” is a film work combining archival footage, superimposed photographs, and video. The title alludes to the work’s central theme: the exploration of memory, time, and the elusive ways in which our memories evolve.
The film unfolds as a visual mosaic reflecting the randomness and complexity of human memory. The photographs were deliberately selected at random, echoing the unpredictability with which the mind retrieves and connects past experiences. They were then scanned in the order in which they were chosen, introducing a subtle structure within this otherwise arbitrary process.
A defining feature of Random Past is the gradual transformation of the video sequences. As the film progresses, the images become increasingly bright and less distinct. This visual shift poetically evokes the way memories blur, fragment, and fade over time. Just as images can lose clarity in the mind, the transition of the video reflects the unstable and evolving nature of recollection.
